For this interchange, a server is use to keep and save the files, and then the clients gets connect to this server in order to download the information they need.

In order to be able to get a connection with an FTP server, you would need some information such as: the name of the server that you want to be connect with, your user name and password (if an authentication is required), and a FTP client application. FileZilla is one of them, it is very complete, very versatile and in addition, it is free.

Let us see how you can be connected to a FTP server using FileZilla.

Instructions

1, First of all, you must install FileZilla. If you did not still download it, you can do it with out any cost entering in our web site.

2. Once the program is already installed, to open the application goes to Start, All the programs, FileZilla Client, FileZilla.

3. The main window of FileZilla has different sectors where you can see information of the local site, the remote site, the state of the connection and the progress of the files transference.

4. In order to be able to get the connection to a remote equipment, you must define the configuration parameters of this server. Using the Manager of Sites of FileZilla, it is possible to create several different servers, and get a quick connection with the one you need.

In order to open the Manager of Sites, you would need to click Files, Manager of sites.

5. The Manager of sites` window shows all the servers that you had set up.

If you select one of them, you will see the detail of its characteristics in the right panel.

6. We are going to create and to set up a server as an example, so you would see how easy it is.

Once in the window of the Manager of sites, press the New Site e button. You will see that automatically an element in the list of sites is added.

7. The name of the new element is selected, so that you can modify it and name it in a more descriptive way so you can recognize it and distinguish it from the others.

Then write a property name for the server.

8. Now you must establish certain basic parameters so that your computer can establish the connection with the remote site that you have just defined: name and kind of server, valid way of access, user and password (if an authentication is required), etc.

These details must to be set up in the General tab of the right panel of the window of the Manager of Sites.

  • Server: In this field you must introduce the name of the server, for example, "ftp.servidor1.com.es". You can also write its IP direction, as it is shown in the image.
  • Port: Here you must write the port of the server where this type of connection is made. If you leave a blank in the space, port 21 will be taken by default.
  • Type of server: In this pull-down menu you must select the kind of the server.
  • Way of access: In the pull-down menu select the type of access to the server. According to the established in this menu, the fields User and Password or Account will be able to be complete it for the authentication.

Complete all the required information and then press Accept.

9. The new site appears in the existing list. Press Accept to close the Manager of Sites and to return to the main window.

10. Repeat steps 4 to 9 to create all the servers you need.

11. To be connected with one of just set up sites, you would need just to unfold the list of servers clicking in the little arrow that is next to the button of the Manager of Sites, in the bar of tools of the main window, and then select the desire site.

12. In the state of the connection panel you will see the status of the process, and if the connection is done successfully.

13. In the right panel, you will see the structure of directories and files of the remote site.

14. If you want to download a directory or a file of the remote site to the selected folder in the local site, you would need just to press the main button of the mouse on the element that you want to download. Without stop pressing the button, "drag" this element towards the sector corresponding to the site local, and stop pressing the button where you want to copy the selected file.

In the information of the state of the transference panel, you will see the detail of the progress of this process. Use the different tabs to see the files that are still in the waiting line to be transferred, those that they were not possible to be made, and those that finalized successful.

15. If you want to change of server and get a connection with equipment, return to press the corresponding button in the bar of tools, and select the new site.

If you have an active connection, FileZilla will ask to you if you want to cancel the present connection, to accede to the new selected equipment.

This is the synthesis of the steps to follow to create and to administrate remote sites with FileZilla:

1. Open the main window of FileZilla, and press the Managing of Sites button in the bar of tools.
