What is hard disks SMART?

S.M.A.R.T. stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology.

This technology is used on modern hard disks for Pcs. By using this system we can prevent data loss caused by a hard disk failure.

The SMART technology needs to be activated on the PC BIOS. This way, we get the BIOS to let us know whether the hard disk has detected any kind of error on the hard disk.

o The hard disk errors the SMART technology detects are:

  1. o Drive spin-up time.
  2. o Calibration errors
  3. o Distance between the heads and the disk platters.
  4. o Drive temperature
  5. o Faulty sectors

The SMART technology assignes some values for these errors, whcich go from 1 to 253, 1 indicating a serious error. If, for instance, drive spin-up time is assigned a 200 value, that means it is working just fine. However, if the drive spin-up time has a 10 value then that means we need to start worrying about the hard disk state.

In order to know the hard disk state we can download HDDlife Pro and it will let you know about your hard disk state.
